The Université de Maroua (UMa) in Cameroon is reorienting its teaching approach to prioritize practical training and entrepreneurship. The institution aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional needs. This shift is evident in its faculties and schools, where students are increasingly involved in hands-on projects and experiential learning. By doing so, UMa seeks to equip students with the skills required to tackle real-world problems.
The École nationale supérieure des mines et des industries pétrolières de Kaélé (ENSMIP) and the École nationale supérieure polytechnique de Maroua (ENSPM) are examples of this practical approach. These institutions offer programs in fields such as agriculture, renewable energy, and telecommunications, which are directly linked to Cameroon's economic and social realities. This focus on applied sciences is also reflected in the Faculty of Sciences, which currently offers 47 active programs, including 21 undergraduate and 20 graduate degrees.
The Faculty of Sciences at UMa has introduced emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity. These programs are designed to address the country's growing needs in areas like renewable energy, biotechnologies, and environmental conservation. According to Professor Mohamadou Alidou, Director of ENSPM, this approach enables students to develop practical skills and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems.
One example of this practical approach is a solar field project undertaken by fourth-year students at ENSPM. The students worked on the project while continuing their studies, dedicating one to two days a week to its realization. This type of experiential learning is a key aspect of UMa's pedagogical strategy, which aims to turn students into entrepreneurs and problem-solvers.
UMa's focus on entrepreneurship and practical training is part of a broader effort to address Cameroon's socio-economic challenges. By producing graduates with relevant skills and expertise, the institution hopes to contribute to the country's development and growth. This approach also aligns with the needs of Cameroon's rapidly evolving economy, which requires professionals who can innovate and adapt.
The university's emphasis on practical training has led to the development of partnerships with the private sector and other stakeholders. These collaborations enable students to gain industry experience and apply their knowledge in real-world settings. By working closely with professionals and entrepreneurs, UMa students can develop a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in their chosen fields.
As UMa continues to implement its practical training approach, it is likely to have a positive impact on Cameroon's education system and economy. By producing graduates with relevant skills and expertise, the institution can help address the country's skills gap and contribute to its socio-economic development. With its focus on entrepreneurship and experiential learning, UMa is setting a new standard for higher education in Cameroon.
