The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) is facing significant challenges, including financial difficulties and deteriorating infrastructure. Outgoing Student Representative Council (SRC) President Mncobi Mamba said students are feeling the effects of the university's crisis, citing difficulties with transport and fuel. He emphasized that the university's crisis is widely reported, and as students, they feel the impacts the most.
The Emvasi Alumni Club is an initiative of the UNESWA Endowment Fund aimed at strengthening the relationship between the university and its alumni. The club provides opportunities for former students to network and contribute to the institution's growth. Mamba said the alumni initiative presents an opportunity for students and alumni to contribute towards addressing some of the university's challenges rather than relying solely on external assistance.
Infrastructure is another major concern for the university, with some buildings described as being in poor condition. Mamba said the condition of some facilities is embarrassing for an institution of UNESWA's size and national importance. He added that students need to see improvements in the environments where they live and study.
UNESWA Vice Chancellor Justice Thwala described alumni as the university's most valuable asset. He said the university is proud of the achievements of its alumni and their contribution to the development of Eswatini, Africa, and beyond. Thwala highlighted the university's continued focus on academic rigour and industry-focused programmes, particularly in science, technology, and agriculture.
The Emvasi Alumni Club brand and product activation was held at Royal Villas in Ezulwini, bringing together alumni, students, staff, university representatives, and other stakeholders for networking and to celebrate the achievements of UNESWA alumni. The event also saw the launch of the UNESWA Endowment Fund's products, including a mobile app, its official logo, and merchandise.
The university's legacy includes nurturing the country's human capital over the past five to six decades. Despite acknowledging the turbulent times the institution has experienced, Thwala emphasized the university's commitment to academic excellence. The UNESWA Endowment Fund plays a crucial role in fostering the university's long-term financial sustainability.
The Emvasi Alumni Club has a presence on social media and online, and the initiative has received support from the outgoing SRC and UNESWA Vice Chancellor Justice Thwala. The club aims to encourage alumni to contribute to the university's growth and development.
