Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco has announced the signing of two agreements with Laval University in Canada to strengthen their academic and scientific cooperation. The agreements were signed on Tuesday at UM6P's campus in Benguerir, building on a partnership that began in 2018. This cooperation aims to expand collaboration across various fields.
The first agreement seeks to structure cooperation across several fields, including science and engineering, agriculture, health, education, and humanities and social sciences. It also aims to strengthen academic mobility, promote joint academic programs, and support collaborative research projects between the two institutions.
The second agreement concerns the establishment of an Associated International Laboratory (LIA) focused on multidisciplinary research at the intersection of physics, optics, electrophysiology, and medical biology. The laboratory will concentrate on developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in neuroscience and oncology, with a particular emphasis on gene therapy.
The LIA will bring together researchers from UM6P's College of Physics and Engineering (CPSE) and Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS), as well as Laval's University Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL) and CERVO Research Center. By combining their expertise, the partner teams aim to better understand disease mechanisms and develop advanced diagnostic and treatment tools.
The collaboration also aims to accelerate the development of innovative solutions in precision medicine through the integration of advanced imaging and functional characterization technologies. This will enable the development of new therapeutic approaches to address patients' needs, particularly in neuroscience and oncology.
The agreements were signed during the visit of Sophie D’Amours, Rector of Laval University. UM6P emphasized that the agreements strengthen cooperation that began with Laval University in 2018. The university also highlighted the support of UM6P Global Hubs Canada for the Canada-Africa Scientific Corridor, which aims to bring research ecosystems closer together.
The Canada-Africa Scientific Corridor strives to strengthen exchanges between researchers and foster joint scientific projects addressing shared health and development challenges. With these agreements, UM6P and Laval University are poised to make significant advancements in various fields, ultimately contributing to the development of innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.
