Former president Uhuru Kenyatta has responded to William Ruto’s use of the nickname “Sponyo” by using it himself, according to Capital FM. Kenyatta included the name at the end of a public message.

The exchange follows a long change in the two leaders’ relationship: they won elections together in 2013 and 2017, before Kenyatta backed Raila Odinga against Ruto in 2022. Kenya’s next general election is due in 2027.
