The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced a shift in focus from bridging the digital connectivity gap to addressing the digital usage gap. This change in priority comes as a result of advancements in satellite internet technology, according to UCC Executive Director George William Nyombi Thembo. Speaking at the 2026 Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards Dinner organised by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), Nyombi Thembo noted that internet connectivity would increasingly become less of a challenge.

The licensing of satellite internet provider Starlink is a significant factor in this shift. With the availability of such technologies, the country's priority should now be to ensure that Ugandans can effectively utilise available digital infrastructure to drive economic growth and improve social development. This new focus aims to harness the potential of digital technologies to promote sustainable business practices and drive economic growth.

Nyombi Thembo highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence, data analytics, cloud computing, and automation in strengthening corporate financial reporting. He emphasized that these technologies can enhance the accuracy and efficiency of financial reporting, enabling organizations to make informed decisions. However, he also cautioned organizations against overlooking cybersecurity, data protection, and information integrity as they embrace digital transformation.

The UCC Executive Director stressed the need for responsible and secure use of technology. He called for stronger corporate governance, transparency, and accountability, noting that credible financial reporting remains critical to attracting investment, promoting responsible business practices, and building stakeholder confidence. This is particularly important in Uganda, where the use of digital technologies is becoming increasingly widespread.

The 16th edition of the FiRe Awards recognized organizations that have demonstrated excellence in corporate financial reporting. The event, which was held at the Serena Hotel in Kampala, highlighted the importance of innovation and technology in promoting sustainable business practices. The awards ceremony brought together professional accountants and business leaders to discuss the role of technology in driving sustainability reporting.

Nyombi Thembo's remarks underscore the need for Uganda to develop a comprehensive strategy for digital development. This strategy should prioritize not only the expansion of digital infrastructure but also the development of skills and capacities to effectively use digital technologies. By doing so, Uganda can harness the potential of digital technologies to drive economic growth, improve social development, and promote sustainable business practices.

The UCC's shift in focus reflects a broader recognition of the need to address the digital usage gap in Uganda. This gap refers to the disparity between the availability of digital infrastructure and the ability of individuals and organizations to effectively use digital technologies. By addressing this gap, Uganda can unlock the full potential of digital technologies and promote sustainable development.
