NIC Life Assurance Company Limited has launched Route Cover, a new micro-life insurance product designed to provide financial protection to passengers on long-distance buses in Uganda. For a premium of Sh1,000, passengers can secure life, disability, and hospital cash benefits in the event of an accident. The product was unveiled at Skyz Hotel in Naguru, Kampala, on Thursday, October 2, 2026.

The Route Cover insurance policy provides Shs10 million in the event of death or total permanent disability, as well as Shs50,000 hospital cash per day for up to 20 days following an insured accident. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on families affected by road crashes, including medical expenses, loss of income, disability, and funeral costs. According to Allen Amoko, Chief Executive Officer of NIC Life Assurance Company Limited, the product is designed to offer meaningful financial protection at an affordable cost.

Unlike conventional insurance policies that require annual premiums, Route Cover is linked directly to a passenger's journey. Passengers can purchase the cover alongside their bus ticket, provide their details digitally, and receive immediate confirmation. The product is intended to complement existing Motor Third Party and Comprehensive Motor Insurance by providing additional passenger-specific benefits following an insured accident.

The launch of Route Cover comes as Uganda continues to grapple with the human and economic costs of road crashes. While road safety measures focus on preventing accidents, victims and families often face significant financial challenges long after a crash. Apollo Kashanku, Assistant Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety at the Ministry of Works and Transport, emphasized the importance of extending passenger protection beyond road safety to financial support when accidents occur.

Kashanku urged transport operators and industry stakeholders to support initiatives that strengthen passenger welfare. He noted that a Sh1,000 cover may seem small, but the protection it provides can be significant when a family is facing uncertainty. The Ministry of Works and Transport is calling for solutions that prioritize passenger welfare and financial resilience in Uganda's public transport system.

NIC Life is currently engaging bus operators and other stakeholders on the implementation model, including passenger registration, premium collection, pilot arrangements, and eventual rollout. According to Amoko, the initiative aims to make insurance more relevant and accessible to ordinary Ugandans. The company's goal is not simply to sell more insurance but to make insurance matter more in the lives of ordinary Ugandans.

As Route Cover moves towards a pilot phase, NIC Life says the product offers a simple proposition: a small contribution during a journey that could provide significant financial support when the unexpected happens. The company believes that if Sh1,000 can provide meaningful financial support to a passenger or family at a moment of crisis, then it has moved insurance closer to the people it is meant to protect.
