Two teachers from Techiman Senior High School in Ghana's Bono East Region have been taken into police custody following allegations of assaulting a 17-year-old student. The incident, which occurred on October 23, 2026, has generated significant public concern after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The suspects, Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, 37, and Ameyaw Adusa, 44, are both teachers at the school, with Owusu Bekoe teaching English Language and Adusa teaching Information and Communications Technology.

According to the Bono East Regional Police Command, the incident involved the two teachers confronting and allegedly assaulting a Form Three student on the school premises at around 4 p.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that the student had earlier been involved in an altercation with two Form One students, which may have led to the alleged assault. The police have confirmed that the two teachers were arrested on November 1, 2026, and are assisting with investigations.

The video footage of the incident, which circulated widely on social media, shows two men physically attacking the student, with one of them appearing to step on his head. This has raised concerns about student safety and the use of physical punishment by teachers in educational institutions. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for accountability and action to be taken against the teachers involved.

In response to the incident, the Ministry of Education has taken steps to investigate the matter. Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, confirmed that the video had been referred to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) for an urgent investigation, as instructed by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu. The Director-General has been directed to ensure that appropriate sanctions are applied to anyone found culpable.

The GES has also initiated a disciplinary process into the incident. On October 31, 2026, the GES issued a statement confirming that the school's disciplinary committee had conducted an initial hearing into the incident. The committee is expected to forward its findings to the school management through the Regional Directorate for further action. The GES has also confirmed that the affected student received medical attention and is responding positively to treatment.

Meanwhile, the Bono East Regional Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students. The Command is also making arrangements to provide the victim with additional medical and psychological support. The police have appealed to the public to remain calm as investigations into the incident continue.

The incident highlights the need for schools to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for students. The Ministry of Education and the GES have stressed that misconduct will not be tolerated from any member of the school community, including teaching and non-teaching staff, students, and parents. The incident is expected to lead to a review of school policies and procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
