A 55-year-old woman, Hannetjie van Zyl, was killed in a farm attack near Ottosdal on October 5. According to the Democratic Alliance (DA), Van Zyl was assaulted with an iron bar at the entrance gate to her farmhouse in the Ottosdal/Wolmaransstad area. The attack occurred as she was getting back into her vehicle after opening the gate. She was struck several times on the head and neck before her handbag and cellphone were stolen.

Van Zyl died on the way to hospital in Klerksdorp. The DA's Theo Venter said the attacks highlight the serious safety challenges facing rural communities. He emphasized that farm attacks, stock theft, and other rural crimes threaten the lives and livelihoods of farmers, farmworkers, and their families. Venter called for effective policing, accountability, and a greater sense of security for rural communities.

In a separate incident, a cattle farmer, Donovan Marx, was critically injured in a farm attack between Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp on Wednesday morning. Marx was shot, beaten, and sustained knife wounds during the attack, which occurred shortly after his wife left for work. The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) reported that Marx was shot in the back and tortured during the attack.

The FF+ described the details of the alleged torture as too disturbing to make public. One of the farm workers was tied up by the attackers but later managed to free himself and raise the alarm. An intensive search was launched for the suspects, who remain at large. Preliminary information suggests they fled the scene in Marx's bakkie.

The FF+ expressed its deepest condolences and offered prayers for Marx and his family as he continues to fight for his life in hospital. This is the second farm attack in the North West this month, following Van Zyl's killing on October 5. The incidents have raised concerns about the safety of rural communities in the region.

Theo Venter's comments highlight the broader implications of these attacks. He stated that rural communities deserve more than assurances; they deserve effective policing, accountability, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing their safety is taken seriously. The DA and FF+ have called for greater action to address rural crime and ensure the safety of those living in these areas.

Police comment has been requested and will be added to this article once received. The search for the suspects in Marx's attack continues, and authorities are working to bring those responsible to justice. The incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by rural communities in South Africa.
