Two police officers, Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemei Borboroi, are set to remain in custody at Industrial Area Remand until October 27, when they are expected to take plea over the murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu. The suspects face murder charges over the killing of Mbobu on September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road as he travelled towards Rongai.
The two officers are now at the centre of investigations into the killing of Mbobu. Court proceedings have also raised questions over possible links between the murder of Mbobu and that of Dr. Victoria Mutiso, in which Rose Mbithe is also an accused. Mbithe, Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa have already appeared before the Milimani courts in the Victoria Mutiso murder case and are expected to be produced at the Kibra High Court on October 27 for plea taking in the Mbobu murder case.
The two officers were ordered to undergo mental assessment at Mbagathi Hospital before their next court appearance. Justice Diana Kavedza directed that the suspects be held at Nairobi Remand and taken to Mbagathi Hospital for the assessment. The defence had sought their detention at Muthangari Police Station, but the request was opposed, with the court stressing the need to balance the rights of the suspects with the demands of justice.
Seven suspects have been linked to the killing of Dr. Victoria Mutiso, while five, including Mbithe, Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa, are also facing murder charges in the Kyalo Mbobu case. Mbithe has emerged as a central figure in both investigations, with the two cases involving separate murder charges against her.
The judge, Justice Diana Kavedza, advised the families of the suspects to provide basic necessities, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, and warm clothing. The court also allowed the families to visit the suspects while in custody. The suspects will appear in court alongside Mbithe, Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa to formally take plea.
Justice Kavedza emphasized the need for justice to be seen to be done, citing her "modus operandi" of balancing the scale of justice. The court rejected the defence's request to detain the suspects at Muthangari Police Station, opting instead for Nairobi Remand.
The murder cases of Mbobu and Dr. Mutiso have raised concerns about possible links between them, with Mbithe being a key figure in both investigations. The suspects will undergo mental assessment as part of the investigations.
