Two individuals who contracted Ebola have been discharged from the Lubero General Reference Hospital in North Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The patients, a member of the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and a young woman, were declared Ebola-free on September 29. The discharge ceremony took place at the hospital in the presence of local authorities, including the territorial administrator, Colonel Kiwewa Mitela Alain.
During the ceremony, Colonel Kiwewa Mitela Alain urged the local population to seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms of the disease, emphasizing that prompt treatment increases the chances of recovery. He encouraged people to accept the reality of the disease and not delay seeking medical help. The two recovered patients are a testament to the effectiveness of timely medical intervention, according to the Colonel.
One of the recovered patients, Katungu Karengya Amusante, expressed gratitude to the medical staff for their care and treatment. She credited her early admission to the hospital for her successful recovery, stating that she had initially feared the worst but was relieved to have received prompt treatment. Her testimony highlights the importance of swift medical attention in combating the disease.
According to Dr. Justin Kisenge, Director of the Lubero General Reference Hospital, the hospital has received 12 confirmed Ebola patients, with 10 of them arriving at an advanced stage of the disease, resulting in fatalities. The doctor expressed joy at the recovery of the two patients, attributing their successful treatment to early intervention. He also acknowledged the efforts of medical staff in saving lives.
Despite the progress made, the healthcare system in the region faces challenges, including limited resources and infrastructure. Many public spaces, including schools, lack basic facilities such as handwashing stations and temperature control equipment. The zone de santé de Lubero requires significant logistical and financial support to effectively combat the epidemic.
The Ebola outbreak in North Kivu province has resulted in a total of 22 reported cases, with 15 deaths, 2 recoveries, and 3 active cases in the Lubero zone de santé. At the national level, 17 new recoveries have been recorded, bringing the total number of people who have recovered from Ebola to 2,105 as of September 28. Vaccination efforts continue in Ituri and Bas-Uele provinces, alongside community awareness campaigns.
