A 55-year-old woman, Hannetjie van Zyl, was attacked and killed at her farm on the outskirts of Ottosdal on Monday evening. According to police spokesperson, Sergeant Kelebogile Morake, Van Zyl was hit several times with an iron rod on the neck and head by the attackers. Her husband, Sarel, found her and called for help, and she was rushed to a hospital in Klerksdorp, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Two men, aged 32 and 33, have been arrested in connection with the murder. They were allegedly identified by a witness and are expected to appear in the Ottosdal Magistrate's Court on charges of murder. The police are still searching for a third suspect. The arrested individuals will appear in court on Thursday. The victim's handbag and cell phone were reportedly stolen during the incident.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams, condemned the murder and praised the investigation team for their swift action in arresting the suspects. He emphasized that the safety and security of people living and working in rural areas remain a priority for the South African Police Service.
The police commissioner expressed deep concern over the incident and offered condolences to the Van Zyl family. He urged rural communities to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to the police, and work with law enforcement agencies to improve safety in farming areas.

The organization's Chief Executive, Bennie van Zyl, stated that farm attacks and murders require a sustained and coordinated response from the government.
According to TLU SA's incident register, there were 26 farm attacks and three farm murders in August 2026, followed by 17 attacks in September. In the first seven days of October, there were seven farm attacks and one farm murder. The organization has expressed concern over the increasing trend of farm murders, with 27 reported so far in 2026.
TLU SA has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to take a clear stance on farm attacks and murders, stating that the lack of clear political leadership on the issue is exacerbating the problem.
