Tunisia's Committee on Defense, Security and Armed Forces held a preliminary session on October 26, 2026, to review the 2027 budget allocations for the interior and defense ministries. The committee, led by Chairman Abdessalam Hamrouni, examined the budget proposals as part of the state's overall budget plan for 2027. The session included presentations on key indicators and figures related to the two ministries' budgets, as well as discussions on various projects and programs.
The committee members praised the successes achieved by the security and military institutions in combating terrorism, preventing crimes, and protecting borders. They emphasized the importance of allocating sufficient funds in the 2027 state budget to enable these institutions to perform their duties effectively. The members also highlighted the need to improve the health and social well-being of security and military personnel.
During the session, committee members raised questions and concerns regarding the progress of projects included in the 2026 budget, the allocation of funds for each ministry, and the implementation of the 2026-2030 development plan. They also discussed various issues related to the interior and defense ministries, including the interior ministry's efforts to maintain public security, prevent disasters, and improve resource utilization.
The interior ministry's budget comprises five strategic programs: national security, national guard, civil protection, local affairs, and leadership and support. Committee members inquired about the measures included in the 2027 budget to enhance public security, particularly in regards to preventing various forms of crime and mitigating the impact of disasters and accidents.
The defense ministry's budget, on the other hand, is divided into three operational programs: military intervention, technical logistical support, and care for military personnel. Committee members discussed issues related to the development of the health and social system for defense ministry personnel, as well as the role of the military in supporting national development efforts.
The committee will continue its work on the 2027 interior and defense budgets through joint sessions with the Committee on Internal Affairs, Immunity, and Legal Matters of the National Council of Regions and Districts, starting from the following week. These sessions aim to thoroughly review the budget proposals and ensure their alignment with the country's development goals.
The preliminary session was attended by committee members, including Elias Boukoussa, deputy chairman, and Fateh Mchergui, committee rapporteur, as well as several other parliamentarians. The committee's discussions and decisions will play a crucial role in shaping the 2027 state budget and ensuring the effective allocation of resources for the interior and defense ministries.
