Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti participated in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group meeting on European Muslims in New York on September 21, 2026. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Tunisian minister emphasized the necessity of addressing populist and extremist rhetoric that uses migration, identity, and religion to fuel discrimination and exclusion. He advocated for a comprehensive approach to combating Islamophobia, encompassing not only legal and security aspects but also addressing its intellectual, cultural, and social causes.
Nafti highlighted the importance of inter-cultural dialogue, developing educational curricula, promoting responsible media, and countering hate speech and misinformation, particularly in the digital space. He recalled Tunisia's organization of an international symposium on November 17, 2025, in cooperation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.
The minister underscored the significance of converting dialogue into concrete initiatives, stressing the need for a proactive approach to promote peace and international security. He reiterated Tunisia's support for OIC efforts to improve the situation of Muslims in Europe and defend their legitimate rights.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Nafti met with Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. They discussed ways to enhance and diversify cooperation between the two countries, including the establishment of a periodic consultation mechanism and cultural, trade, investment, and student exchanges.
The two ministers emphasized the importance of developing the legal framework governing bilateral relations in various fields. Tunisia and Moldova are committed to strengthening their cooperation, with a focus on promoting peace, security, and understanding between nations.
