The Tunisian government has announced plans to enhance its electricity production capacity by equipping certain turbines with cooling systems. This initiative is expected to yield an additional 50 megawatts of electricity, according to Salah Zouari, the interim Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mines. The project, valued at approximately 18 million dinars, aims to improve the performance of existing turbines and bolster the country's electrical grid.

Minister Zouari presented his department's mission for 2027 to the parliamentary committees on industry and productive sectors of both legislative chambers. He emphasized that the cooling systems will be installed on turbines lacking suitable cooling devices. This move is part of a broader strategy to increase production without relying solely on new installations. By optimizing existing infrastructure, the government hopes to meet growing electricity demands.

The cooling system project is one of several measures aimed at enhancing Tunisia's electricity production. The minister also mentioned plans to accelerate the adoption of gas engine measures and explore available offers to strengthen the grid in specific sites. These efforts are crucial in ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply for the country.

In addition to the cooling system project, the government has set a goal to achieve at least 16% of renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2027. The minister highlighted that programs for self-production and granted authorizations are expected to add at least 300 megawatts of capacity in 2027, with the potential to exceed this target.

The implementation of cooling systems on existing turbines is a strategic move to increase electricity production without incurring the costs of building new power plants. This approach also underscores the government's commitment to optimizing existing resources and reducing the country's reliance on imported energy sources.

According to Minister Zouari, some 200 megawatts of capacity are scheduled for 2028. The government's efforts to boost electricity production are crucial in meeting the country's growing energy demands and ensuring a reliable supply of electricity for its citizens.

The project to install cooling systems on turbines is a significant step towards enhancing Tunisia's electricity production capacity. With an expected gain of 50 megawatts, this initiative will contribute to the country's goal of increasing its electricity production and reducing its reliance on external energy sources.
