Tunisia has set a goal to produce 35% of its electricity from solar energy by 2030, according to Minister of Equipment and Housing, Salah Zwari. In an interview with the "Energy" platform, Zwari outlined the country's strategic plan for the oil and gas sector, which will focus on the gas sector from 2026 to 2030. The plan aims to maximize the potential of existing concessions and explore new opportunities for investment in the gas sector.

The country's oil sector is facing challenges, with declining reserves compared to previous years. However, the gas sector presents opportunities for new investments, particularly with international partners from Europe and other regions. Zwari emphasized that the country's current production of oil and gas is not sufficient to meet its energy demands, necessitating the importation of gas from neighboring countries, such as Algeria.

Tunisia's renewable energy strategy prioritizes solar energy, with a target of generating 35% of its electricity from solar power by 2030. The minister noted that the current contribution of solar energy to the country's electricity production is around 12%. The plan is to gradually increase this share over the next decade, reaching 50% by 2035.

The country's energy mix is currently dominated by gas, which accounts for a significant proportion of electricity production. However, the government aims to diversify its energy sources, increasing the share of renewable energy in the energy mix. Zwari highlighted the importance of partnerships with international companies to develop the country's renewable energy sector.

Tunisia is also planning to issue a new decree to regulate the hydrocarbons sector, as part of efforts to improve the business environment and attract investment. The decree is expected to provide a framework for the exploration and production of oil and gas, as well as the development of renewable energy projects.

The minister emphasized that the development of renewable energy in Tunisia will require significant investment, both from domestic and international sources. The government is working to create an enabling environment for investment in the sector, including the establishment of a new regulatory framework and incentives for investors.

Tunisia's renewable energy ambitions are part of a broader strategy to reduce the country's dependence on imported energy sources and mitigate the impact of climate change. The country's energy sector is expected to play a critical role in driving economic growth and development over the next decade.
