Tunisia has joined four other countries in signing the Algerian Ministerial Declaration on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor. The declaration was signed during the second ministerial meeting of the countries involved in the project, which took place in Algiers on October 1, 2026. The meeting was attended by representatives of the partner countries, including Tunisia's Minister of Equipment and Housing, who is also in charge of the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy.

The minister, Salah الزواري, emphasized the importance of the meeting as an opportunity to exchange views and deepen dialogue between North African countries and their European partners on the future of energy. He highlighted the challenges posed by climate change and structural transformations in the energy sector, including controlling energy costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The minister also stressed that the energy transition represents a strategic opportunity to build a new partnership between North Africa and Europe.

Tunisia is adopting a pragmatic approach to the energy transition, focusing on promoting investment in renewable energies and using modern technologies, including green hydrogen and its derivatives. The country's energy transition projects are part of a comprehensive approach that takes into account environmental impacts, infrastructure, and national energy needs. Tunisia's geographical location and energy infrastructure make it a natural partner in developing a regional system for transporting clean energies between North Africa and Europe.

The minister reiterated Tunisia's commitment to continuing dialogue with its Algerian and European partners to move from exchanging views to identifying economic projects that can be implemented and financed. He emphasized the importance of evaluating the feasibility and environmental impact of projects, as well as promoting cooperation in research, innovation, and technology transfer. This cooperation aims to enhance energy security on both sides of the Mediterranean.

The second ministerial meeting resulted in the signing of the Algerian Ministerial Declaration on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project, which involves establishing a dedicated secretariat to provide technical support for the project. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will provide support for the project. This development reflects the push for Euro-Mediterranean cooperation to develop green hydrogen and enhance energy security.

The Southern Hydrogen Corridor project aims to create a regional system for transporting clean energies between North Africa and Europe.
