Tunisia is set to launch its pomegranate export season on September 29, with a projected production of 98,000 tons, an 8% increase from last year's 91,000 tons. The country's pomegranate production has been steadily increasing, despite a 15% decline in cultivated areas due to climatic factors. According to Tarek Tira, director of export development at the Tunisian National Fruit and Vegetable Association, the export season will start with a target price that will be updated throughout the season based on market conditions.
The pomegranate export season was determined after a meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture, representatives from regional agricultural development offices, and industry stakeholders. The meeting aimed to assess the ripening and coloration of pomegranates, as well as coordinate with various parties involved. Tira stated that the export season will focus on promoting Tunisian pomegranates in international markets, particularly in Europe.
In terms of export performance, Tunisia's pomegranate exports reached 9,791 tons, valued at approximately $34.3 million, as of December 31, 2025. This represents a 15% decline in quantity compared to the same period in 2024, but a 16% increase in value. The country's pomegranates are mainly exported to 11 countries worldwide.
To promote Tunisian pomegranates in the domestic market, the National Fruit and Vegetable Association will launch an advertising campaign, including promotional materials and a promotional video in Arabic and French, with English subtitles. The association will also participate in various regional and local events related to the pomegranate sector.
The association has planned a rich promotional program for the international market, including participation in the SIAL food exhibition in Paris from October 17 to 21, 2026. The event aims to promote Tunisian pomegranates and establish relationships with importers and industry professionals. Additionally, the association will participate in the Fruit Attraction exhibition in Madrid, Spain, from October 6 to 8, 2026.
The promotional program also includes organizing promotional activities in the Italian market, particularly in Rome and Milan, to stimulate demand for Tunisian pomegranates. Furthermore, an advertising campaign will be launched at the Ras Jedour border crossing, aiming to promote Tunisian pomegranates and enhance their presence among consumers and industry professionals.
The Tunisian National Fruit and Vegetable Association will also participate in the SIAT international exhibition on agricultural investment and technology, scheduled for October 28-31, 2026. The event will provide an opportunity to promote Tunisian pomegranates and explore new business opportunities.
