The National Traffic Safety Observatory in Tunisia has reported an 11.11% increase in traffic accident fatalities since the beginning of 2026, compared to the same period last year. In contrast, during the same period in 2025, there were 3986 accidents, 882 fatalities, and 5299 injuries.
According to the observatory, the main causes of accidents are lack of attention and distraction, which led to 1021 accidents (30.17%), followed by speeding, which caused 740 accidents (21.87%). Other causes include failure to respect priority, which resulted in 263 accidents (7.77%), and reckless crossing of the road, which led to 258 accidents (7.62%).
The observatory also revealed that speeding is the leading cause of fatal accidents, resulting in 360 deaths (36.73% of total fatalities) and 1021 injuries (23.25%). Lack of attention and distraction caused 177 fatalities and 1128 injuries, while reckless crossing of the road led to 65 deaths and 227 injuries.
The governorate of Tunis has recorded the highest number of traffic accidents, with 403 incidents resulting in 76 fatalities and 496 injuries. The governorate of Mahdia follows closely, with 284 accidents, 47 fatalities, and 349 injuries. On the other hand, the governorate of Kébili recorded the lowest number of accidents, with 43 incidents, 13 fatalities, and 65 injuries.
The National Traffic Safety Observatory emphasized that the statistics and data for 2026 are preliminary and subject to daily updates based on information received from official sources. The observatory also noted that the geographical ranking of accidents and casualties is a quantitative measure that does not take into account demographic and socio-economic factors specific to each region.
