According to the National Observatory for Road Safety, Tunisia has recorded 3616 traffic accidents since the beginning of 2026, resulting in 1029 fatalities and 4692 injuries. This represents a significant increase from the same period in 2025, when 4177 accidents were recorded, resulting in 929 fatalities and 5534 injuries. The data, which was published on the observatory's official website, highlights a concerning trend in road safety in Tunisia.

The main causes of traffic accidents in Tunisia have been identified as driver error and inattention, accounting for 1112 accidents (30.75%). Speeding was the second most common cause, responsible for 777 accidents (21.49%). Other contributing factors included failure to respect priority (283 accidents, 7.83%) and reckless driving (269 accidents, 7.44%). These statistics suggest that driver behavior is a major factor in road accidents.

The National Observatory for Road Safety also reported that speeding was the leading cause of fatal accidents, resulting in 377 fatalities (36.64%) and 1070 injuries (22.80%). Driver error and inattention were the second most common causes of fatalities, accounting for 190 deaths and 1227 injuries. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions to address these specific issues.

Regionally, the governorate of Tunis recorded the highest number of traffic accidents, with 459 incidents resulting in 86 fatalities and 563 injuries. The governorate of Mahdia followed closely, with 303 accidents resulting in 49 fatalities and 375 injuries. In contrast, the governorate of Kébili recorded the lowest number of accidents, with 44 incidents resulting in 13 fatalities and 66 injuries.

The data also revealed that August was the deadliest month, with 146 fatalities and 542 injuries resulting from 405 accidents. April, however, saw the highest number of accidents, with 455 incidents resulting in 105 fatalities and 568 injuries. These monthly fluctuations highlight the need for sustained efforts to improve road safety throughout the year.

The National Observatory for Road Safety noted that its statistics are based on preliminary data, which may be subject to revision as new information becomes available. The observatory emphasized that its data is derived from official sources and is updated regularly. This ensures that the information remains accurate and reliable.

The observatory also cautioned that its rankings of governorates by accident frequency are based solely on quantitative data and do not take into account demographic or socio-economic factors that may influence road safety. This limitation underscores the need for further research to understand the underlying causes of road accidents in different regions.
