The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has approved a financing package of €335.49 million for Tunisia to support the extension of the country's highway network to the governorates of Le Kef and Jendouba. This decision was made during the 368th meeting of the IDB's Board of Directors, held in Jeddah on September 29-30, 2026. The financing is allocated to the Highway Network Extension Project, aiming to improve connectivity and accessibility in these regions.

The project is expected to enhance mobility, road safety, and the quality of transportation infrastructure. Beyond its impact on the road network, the IDB views this project as a tool for regional development. Improved connections to the northwest of Tunisia are anticipated to foster economic integration of the two governorates and strengthen their connection to the rest of the country.

The technical studies for the El Kef-Tunis section were completed in the first half of 2026, and the launch of works is anticipated in the coming months. This financing is part of a broader allocation of $938 million approved by the IDB for six member countries during the same meeting. Tunisia is the primary beneficiary in terms of value.

The IDB's financing for Tunisia is part of a larger effort to support development in various sectors, including energy, agriculture, health, transportation, and water and sanitation. The bank's support for Tunisia's infrastructure development is ongoing, with a focus on enhancing the country's transportation network and regional connectivity.

The Highway Network Extension Project is expected to have a positive impact on the economic and social development of the Le Kef and Jendouba regions. By improving road connectivity, the project aims to increase access to markets, services, and opportunities, ultimately contributing to the country's economic growth.

The IDB's financing for Tunisia is also seen as a reflection of the strong cooperation between the bank and the Tunisian government. The two parties are working on a new cooperation strategy for the period 2026-2029, focusing on key sectors such as industry, energy, and renewable energy.

The approval of this financing package demonstrates the IDB's commitment to supporting Tunisia's development goals. With a focus on sustainable and inclusive growth, the bank's investments in the country's infrastructure are expected to have a lasting impact on the lives of Tunisian citizens.
