The Société nationale d'exploitation et de distribution des eaux (SONEDE) has reviewed ongoing and planned potable water projects in Tunisia's Jendouba region. A meeting was held at the regional government headquarters to discuss the projects' progress. The director of SONEDE's northern region, Rabeh Mansour, provided an update on the projects. The initiative aims to address the region's water scarcity issues.
SONEDE has allocated over 112 million dinars to various projects in Jendouba between 2019 and 2026. The investment focuses on long-term solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change, drought, and record high temperatures. The projects prioritize sustainable water management and supply. This allocation demonstrates the government's commitment to improving the region's water infrastructure.
A major project is the construction of a water treatment plant in Tabarka, with an investment of over 50 million dinars. The plant is expected to alleviate the region's water deficit, particularly during the summer months. The project is 35% complete and is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2027. Once operational, the plant will significantly improve the region's water supply.
The region's water resources are comprised of 57% surface water and 43% groundwater. SONEDE's projects aim to optimize the use of these resources. However, some projects are facing delays due to issues such as contract terminations and land ownership disputes. The progress of these projects varies, with some advancing at rates of 63% to 72%.
Participants at the meeting called for the acceleration of several projects, including the supply of water to the Al-Jalil border post and several agglomerations. They also recommended the construction of a new water treatment plant in Jendouba. Additionally, the participants emphasized the need to complete the connection of certain hydraulic groups to SONEDE and ensure optimal preparation for the summer of 2027.
The meeting highlighted the importance of addressing the region's water scarcity issues. The projects aim to improve the quality and availability of potable water for the local population. SONEDE's efforts are crucial in ensuring a reliable water supply, particularly in the face of climate change and increasing temperatures.
The Tunisian government's investment in SONEDE's projects demonstrates its commitment to improving the country's water infrastructure. The 112 million dinar allocation is a significant step towards addressing the region's water scarcity issues. The successful completion of these projects will have a positive impact on the local population and contribute to the region's economic development.
