The National Energy Control Agency in Tunisia has begun distributing electric vehicles to model municipalities across the country. On October 8 and 9, 2026, the municipalities of Sfax, Djerba Ajim, Houma Souk, and Midoun received a total of five electric vehicles. This initiative is part of a broader program aimed at promoting the adoption of electric transportation in Tunisia. The program is designed to support the country's energy transition strategy.

The distribution of electric vehicles is a key component of Tunisia's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable transportation. The National Energy Control Agency has stated that the municipalities of Sfax, Djerba Ajim, Houma Souk, and Midoun will benefit from additional equipment in the near future. Sfax municipality will receive 75 electric motorcycles, while the municipalities on Djerba island will be equipped with six electric utility vehicles.

The program is being implemented in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and is financed by the Global Environment Fund. The National Energy Control Agency has designed the program in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment. The initiative aims to support local municipal work, reduce polluting emissions, and promote energy efficiency.

The ceremony for the distribution of electric vehicles was attended by Nacef Bakkari, Director-General of the National Energy Control Agency, and Saad Ben Hassan, Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization's office in Tunisia. The event was also attended by the mayors of the municipalities that received the vehicles and Abd al-Hamid Qanuni, director of the program.

The National Energy Control Agency has emphasized that the program includes the installation of fast charging points in all model municipalities. These charging points will be equipped with solar photovoltaic systems, ensuring that the energy used is entirely clean and renewable. This infrastructure is critical to the success of Tunisia's energy transition strategy.

The distribution of electric vehicles and the installation of charging infrastructure are part of a broader effort to promote sustainable transportation in Tunisia. The program aims to reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels and promote the adoption of clean energy solutions. By supporting the transition to electric vehicles, Tunisia hopes to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
