Tunisia's Minister of Health, Mustafa Al-Ferjani, has emphasized the importance of the health sector as a key driver of economic growth. He stated that the sector not only ensures the sustainability of human capital and improves productivity but also generates significant economic returns through pharmaceuticals and medical tourism. The Minister made these remarks during the signing of the National Health Charter on Thursday.
According to Al-Ferjani, Tunisia exports pharmaceuticals to over 25 countries worldwide and has a well-established reputation in medical tourism. The country's medical tourism industry is built on its highly skilled medical professionals and surgeons, as well as its therapeutic tourism sector, which leverages mineral water and seawater. Previous estimates suggest that Tunisia receives over 500,000 individuals for medical procedures and attracts over 2 million visitors annually.
The health sector is considered one of the areas with significant economic returns and the potential to contribute to development and job creation. In addition to these emerging sectors, Tunisia is also focusing on digital health, which is part of a comprehensive policy aimed at developing healthcare infrastructure and facilities. The Minister noted that this policy has the support of a strong political will.
Al-Ferjani highlighted the recent decision to grant university hospital status to certain regional health facilities. This move aims to create momentum within healthcare institutions by attracting resident doctors and interns and hosting training sessions, which will support education and training. The Minister also mentioned that Tunisia hosted the International Conference on Digital Health, "Telehealth," from September 29 to October 1, 2026.
The conference brought together over 35 countries, global experts, and ministers, and provided a platform for cooperation with various organizations, countries, and companies operating in digital health. Several Tunisian institutions signed cooperation agreements with countries during the conference. The Minister noted that Tunisia is one of only five countries worldwide that has entered the field of digital hospitals.
The country's experience in digital health transformation has earned it recognition alongside countries such as the UK, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Jordan. Al-Ferjani emphasized that the health sector is a significant contributor to the economy, and its development is crucial for the country's growth. The sector's potential for job creation and economic returns makes it a vital area of focus.
The Tunisian government is committed to developing the health sector and has taken steps to enhance its infrastructure and facilities. The sector's growth is expected to have a positive impact on the country's economy and provide new opportunities for its citizens. With its focus on digital health, pharmaceuticals, and medical tourism, Tunisia is poised to become a major player in the region's healthcare industry.
