According to Dr. Hanen Bouaziz, a professor of oncology at the Salah Azizi Institute for Cancer Treatment, Tunisia recorded 10,720 new cases of various types of cancer among women in 2025. This was announced during a recent awareness day about breast cancer organized by the Tunisian Africa News Agency. The event aimed to promote awareness about the importance of breast cancer prevention and early detection.
Dr. Bouaziz stated that one in eight women worldwide is affected by breast cancer, which is the most common cancer among women. She added that one-fifth of these cases are under the age of 50, and nine out of ten cases can be cured if detected early. Furthermore, she emphasized that having a lump in the breast does not necessarily mean it is a tumor, as eight out of ten cases are benign.
Dr. Bouaziz also highlighted the importance of psychological care for breast cancer patients, particularly after surgery. She mentioned that five psychologists are available to provide psychological support to patients at the Salah Azizi Institute. Additionally, she noted that 70% of women do not have their husbands accompanying them during treatment, citing a study conducted at the institute.
Dr. Somia Mansouri, coordinator of the National Cancer Control Program, stated that the theme of this year's breast cancer awareness campaign in Tunisia is "Screening is up to you, and the rest is up to us." She emphasized the significance of screening and early detection of breast cancer, which accounts for 30% of cancers affecting women in Tunisia. In 2025, 4,500 cases of breast cancer were registered.
Dr. Mansouri also mentioned that the awareness campaign, which includes open days and health checks, aims to encourage women to undergo screening and early detection. She noted that these events have become increasingly popular, with more women participating in screening and detection. This has led to an increase in the number of new cases registered annually.
According to Dr. Mansouri, the incidence of cancer is increasing globally due to risk factors such as poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, smoking, and psychological stress. She emphasized that three types of cancer can be screened: breast, cervical, and colon cancer. Early detection can help prevent or reduce the severity of these cancers.
The Salah Azizi Institute for Cancer Treatment will organize an open day for breast cancer screening and awareness on the last Saturday of October. The event, held in collaboration with associations active in the field, will provide free mammography for cases that require it. This aims to promote awareness and encourage women to undergo screening and early detection.
