Tunisia's Agence Nationale pour la Maitrise de l'Energie (ANME) has announced that 23 individual taxi owners will receive a 10,000-dinar subsidy to purchase electric vehicles. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of electric mobility in Tunisia and reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. The program is a collaboration between ANME, the Ministry of Environment, the Global Environment Facility, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (ONUDI).

The subsidy program is exclusively for individual taxi operators aged between 31 and 59, with valid licenses to operate in Tunisia. Applicants must also provide proof of bank credit agreements or leasing, or demonstrate their financial capacity. This move is part of Tunisia's efforts to encourage the transition to electric vehicles, with a goal of reaching 50,000 electric cars by 2030.

Tunisia has implemented various incentives to promote electric and hybrid vehicle adoption, including tax exemptions and financial benefits. The law of finances for 2026 aims to increase the number of electric vehicles on the road, with plans to develop an infrastructure of 5,000 charging points nationwide. Electric vehicles are exempt from customs duties and consumption tax, and have a reduced value-added tax (VAT) rate of 7%.

In addition to tax benefits, the national program for promoting electric mobility offers a direct financial subsidy of 10,000 dinars for each electric vehicle purchased by companies, public institutions, local authorities, and professionals, including individual taxi owners. This phase is part of a pilot program aimed at supporting the transition to sustainable mobility.

The program also includes measures to facilitate financing for electric vehicle purchases, with the state covering part of the bank interest on credits for these vehicles. This aims to encourage households and professionals to adopt electric mobility. The initiative is part of Tunisia's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels.

According to the ANME, August 2026 was the hottest month in Tunisia since 1950, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change. The adoption of electric vehicles is seen as a key strategy in this effort, with the transportation sector being a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

The subsidy program for electric taxis is a step towards achieving Tunisia's goal of increasing the use of electric vehicles and reducing emissions. With 23 taxi owners set to benefit from the subsidy, the program is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and contribute to the country's transition to sustainable mobility.
