Tunisia has solidified its position as a leader in African date exports, generating $347 million in revenue in 2025. This represents over one billion dinars or approximately €300 million, based on an exchange rate of 1 euro to 3.33 dinars. The country's date exports totaled 147,000 tonnes, with Algeria exporting 185,000 tonnes, but earning significantly less at $184 million. Tunisia's high export value is attributed to its premium date varieties.

The value of Tunisia's date exports stands out, with an average of $2,400 per tonne, compared to less than $1,000 per tonne for Algerian exports. This disparity is largely due to the popularity of the Deglet Nour variety, primarily cultivated in the southern regions of Kébili and Tozeur. This variety is highly prized in international markets, contributing to Tunisia's strong export performance. Despite producing lower quantities than some African countries, Tunisia's focus on quality and market positioning yields a higher commercial value.

Tunisia accounts for approximately 13% of the global date export market. This trend continues in the 2025-2026 campaign, with Tunisia exporting 144,100 tonnes of dates in the first ten months, representing a 13.3% increase from the previous campaign. The revenue generated during this period was 908.4 million dinars, approximately €272.8 million, marking a 12.2% increase. The Deglet Nour variety dominates exports, making up around 84% of the total volume.

Tunisian dates are now present in around 86 markets worldwide. The European Union remains the primary market, with Morocco, Italy, and Germany being the top importers. The organic segment is also growing, generating 82.2 million dinars, or approximately €24.7 million, in revenue during the first ten months of the 2025-2026 campaign. This growth highlights the increasing demand for organic products.

Egypt, Libya, and South Africa complete the top five African date-exporting countries by volume. However, Tunisia's high-value exports set it apart from its competitors. The country's emphasis on quality, selection, and packaging enables it to command a premium price in international markets. As a result, Tunisia maintains its position as a leading player in the global date export market.

The Tunisian date sector's performance is a testament to the country's agricultural expertise and strategic market positioning. With a strong focus on premium varieties and quality, Tunisian date exports are likely to continue their growth trajectory. The sector's success also underscores the importance of adapting to changing market trends and consumer preferences.

As the 2025-2026 campaign progresses, Tunisian date exports are expected to maintain their momentum. With a solid foundation in place, the sector is poised for continued growth, driven by the country's reputation for high-quality dates and its strong presence in international markets. Key players in the sector will likely focus on sustaining this growth while exploring new markets and opportunities.
