On October 8 and 9, Tunisia delivered 5 electric vehicles to model municipalities in the governorate of Sfax and Djerba Island. The handover was part of the implementation of the "Intensification of Electric Mobility Adoption in Tunisia" program and the country's energy transition strategy. The program aims to support local municipalities and reduce polluting emissions. The National Agency for Energy Control (ANEC) reported that the municipalities of Sfax, Djerba-Ajim, Djerba-Houmt Souk, and Djerba-Midoun benefited from the electric vehicles.
The electric vehicles were distributed as follows: Sfax municipality received 2 vehicles, while each of the Djerba-Ajim, Djerba-Houmt Souk, and Djerba-Midoun municipalities received 1 vehicle. The municipalities are expected to receive additional environmentally friendly equipment, including 75 electric motorcycles for Sfax municipality and 6 electric utility vehicles for the Djerba municipalities. The program also includes the acquisition of electric vehicles and motorcycles for the municipality of Banzert.
The program aims to ensure a successful transition to electric mobility by installing fast charging stations in all model municipalities. These stations will be equipped with photovoltaic systems that rely 100% on solar energy. The program was designed by the ANEC in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and implemented in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by the Global Environment Facility.
The handover ceremony was attended by the Director-General of the ANEC, Nafaa Bekkari, and the Director of the UNIDO office, Sad Ben Hassan, among others. The program is part of the efforts to support local municipal work, reduce polluting emissions, and rationalize energy consumption, contributing to sustainable development.
The program is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and the municipalities' transportation systems. The electric vehicles and equipment will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. The program also aims to promote the adoption of electric mobility in Tunisia and encourage other municipalities to follow suit.
The ANEC and its partners are committed to supporting the implementation of the program and ensuring its success. The program is part of Tunisia's efforts to achieve its energy transition goals and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. The country aims to increase its use of renewable energy sources and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
The delivery of the electric vehicles is a significant step towards achieving Tunisia's sustainable development goals. The program will contribute to the country's efforts to reduce its environmental impact and promote sustainable transportation. The municipalities that received the electric vehicles will serve as models for other municipalities in Tunisia.
