Transport stakeholders in Mwanza have expressed readiness to relocate to the designated Nyabulogoya truck terminal in Nyamagana District. However, they are urging authorities to address existing infrastructure and operational challenges. The stakeholders, represented by the Tanzania Truck Owners Association (TATOA), highlighted poor road conditions, inadequate social services, limited parking space, and concerns over traffic congestion as key issues requiring immediate attention.
The Mwanza Regional Chairperson of TATOA, Mfuko Mahalu, raised concerns about the feeder road to Nyabulogoya, describing it as hilly and slippery. This condition is expected to worsen during the anticipated El Niño rains, posing significant safety risks. Additionally, Mahalu pointed out that the terminal serves as an open market every Tuesday, and there is uncertainty about how business will be conducted on that day.
Mahalu proposed an alternative location, Buhongwa, as a permanent truck terminal. He argued that Buhongwa could accommodate about 200 trucks, compared to Nyabulogoya's estimated capacity of 50. The location of Buhongwa on the outskirts of the city is also seen as beneficial for easing traffic congestion, unlike Nyabulogoya, which is close to the city centre.
Truck driver Erick Edson supported the proposal for alternative locations, suggesting Mchafukuoga as a suitable option due to its relatively flat terrain. Edson noted that the challenging conditions at Nyabulogoya might prevent trucks from entering or leaving during the rains. This highlights the need for a more suitable and accessible location for truck operations.
Nyamagana District Commissioner Amina Makilagi responded to the concerns, stating that the government has accepted the proposal to establish a permanent truck terminal at Buhongwa. She mentioned that property valuation for people expected to vacate the area is underway, alongside the preparation of design drawings and other preliminary arrangements.
Makilagi assured that Nyabulogoya would continue to serve as a temporary terminal as preparations for the permanent facility progress. She emphasized the government's commitment to community engagement to reach a mutually beneficial solution. The district commissioner expressed confidence that ongoing discussions with transport stakeholders would lead to a resolution of the existing challenges.
