Troops of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have conducted successful operations in Sokoto State, rescuing 23 kidnapped civilians and arresting four suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group. The operations, which took place on Sunday, also foiled attempted terrorist attacks in Wurno, Sabon Birni, and Isa Local Government Areas. The efforts were confirmed by Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, the Media Information Officer of the JTF North-West.
The operations began with a response to an attack on Sabon Gari in Wurno Local Government Area. Terrorists had invaded the community, opening sporadic fire and forcing residents to flee. Troops quickly engaged the attackers, forcing them to retreat, and rescued six kidnapped victims. One civilian who sustained a gunshot wound during the attack was evacuated to a medical facility for treatment. The swift response demonstrated the military's commitment to protecting local communities.
In another operation, troops acted on intelligence about an attempted terrorist movement along the Sabon Birni–Takatsaba Road. An ambush was set up along the terrorists' route, and upon sighting them, troops engaged the terrorists with firepower, forcing them to flee in disarray. This proactive measure prevented further attacks and showcased the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations.
In Isa Local Government Area, troops responded to a distress call regarding terrorist activities along the Isa–Kwanar Isa–Shinkafi Road. The troops engaged the terrorists, who subsequently withdrew. A search of the area led to the rescue of 17 kidnapped civilians. One of the rescued victims, who sustained a fracture, was immediately evacuated to the General Hospital, Isa, for medical attention. The rescue operations highlight the military's dedication to safeguarding civilians.
In addition to the rescue operations, four suspected Lakurawa members were arrested in Illela Local Government Area. Intelligence had indicated the movement of suspected terrorists allegedly driving rustled cattle from Sarma Village towards Illela. Troops established a snap checkpoint along the route, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of six cows. The suspects and recovered livestock were taken into military custody for further investigation.
The operations demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led and proactive measures by Sector 2 OPFY in disrupting terrorist activities and rescuing kidnapped civilians. Lt. Col.
