On October 7, troops from Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, successfully repelled an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on the Forward Operating Base in Maiyama, Kebbi State. The attack occurred in the early hours of the day, with a large group of fighters, reportedly over 100, riding motorcycles and armed with sophisticated weapons. The terrorists attempted to overrun the military base but were met with superior firepower from the troops.

According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, the attackers were armed with General Purpose Machine Guns and Rocket-Propelled Grenades. Despite their firepower, the troops held their positions and engaged the attackers, forcing them to withdraw into the surrounding terrain. Several of the attackers were reportedly neutralised during the encounter, while others fled with gunshot wounds.

A subsequent exploitation and pursuit operation led to the recovery of 17 motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing terrorists. The troops also recovered a PKT machine gun, an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and Baofeng communication radios reportedly used by the attackers during the assault. The recovered items suggest that the terrorists were well-equipped and had planned the attack meticulously.

The area remains under the control of the troops, who are conducting aggressive patrols and dominance operations to track the fleeing members of the group. The successful repulsion of the attack and recovery of the terrorists' equipment demonstrate the military's capability to respond to and counter terrorist threats in the region.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the Kebbi State region. The military has been working to enhance its presence and operations in the area to prevent and respond to terrorist attacks. The troops' swift response and effective engagement with the attackers likely prevented a more severe outcome.

The recovered equipment and neutralised attackers provide valuable intelligence for the military and security agencies. This intelligence can be used to further disrupt and dismantle the Lakurawa terrorist group, reducing the threat they pose to the region. The military's efforts to track and apprehend the fleeing terrorists are ongoing.

The repulsion of the Lakurawa attack on the Kebbi military base demonstrates the military's commitment to protecting the region and its people from terrorist threats. The incident also underscores the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation among security agencies to prevent and respond to terrorist activities effectively.
