In a bid to combat cancer in Togo, 100 women, including bar servers and owners, were recently sensitized on the importance of early detection of breast and cervical cancer. The two-day workshop, held in Kara on October 21-22, was organized by Lomé's BB Brewery in collaboration with the FemSansCancer association. This initiative is part of the annual "Octobre Rose" campaign, aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer.

The workshop focused on educating participants on the best practices for self-examination of the breasts, identifying signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and encouraging regular screening for cervical cancer. Using posters and projections, the women were informed about the risks and consequences of these diseases. Practical exercises allowed them to learn and adapt to different techniques of self-consultation and initial actions to take in case of symptoms.

Dr. Kouvahey Damien, President of the Togolese Federation of Organizations for the Fight Against Non-Communicable Diseases, was the trainer for the workshop. He explained that breast cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth in the breast, often caused by hormonal and age-related factors. Dr. Kouvahey emphasized that the risk of breast cancer increases with age and highlighted the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

According to Dr. Kouvahey, breast cancer can manifest through various signs, including a nodule with bleeding, orange skin, or a breast that grows more than the other and changes shape. He encouraged young girls to perform self-examinations to become familiar with their breasts and seek medical attention immediately if they notice any unusual signs.

The workshop also covered cervical cancer, which Dr. Kouvahey described as being caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus can remain dormant in the cervix for 10 to 15 years before causing lesions that can lead to cancer. Dr. Kouvahey advised young girls to avoid early sexual relationships, having multiple partners, and using certain chemical products that can increase the risk of cervical cancer.

The goal of this sensitization campaign is to contribute to the fight against breast and cervical cancer in Togo through early detection and awareness. By educating women on the importance of regular screening and a healthy lifestyle, organizers hope to reduce the risks associated with these diseases.

The campaign also aims to raise funds for cancer research and promote a culture of prevention and early detection. By empowering women with knowledge and skills, the organizers believe that they can make a significant impact in the fight against cancer in Togo.
