The University of Lomé (UL) in Togo and Rostock University in Germany have signed a partnership agreement in the field of energy and green hydrogen. This makes the University of Lomé the first African university to conclude such an agreement. The partnership was signed by Kossivi Hounaké, President of UL, and Philippe Marzahn, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Sciences at Rostock University.
The agreement provides for the creation of a certified Master's program by the European Union, titled International Master Programme in Energy and Green Hydrogen (IMP-EGH). This program is part of a larger initiative funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research, coordinated by Rostock and RWTH Aachen universities, as well as the Jülich Research Center, in partnership with the WASCAL Excellence Center.
Four West African institutions participate in this initiative, including the University of Lomé, Cheikh Anta Diop University in Senegal, Félix Houphouët-Boigny University in Côte d'Ivoire, and Abdou Moumouni University in Niger. Students from Togo will be able to obtain a double academic recognition, with a diploma awarded by each of the two institutions.
The partnership also provides for mobility opportunities for students and researchers, as well as professional insertion prospects. The Faculty of Agriculture, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Sciences at Rostock University brings together agricultural, environmental, and engineering disciplines with economic and planning expertise, a unique combination in the German-speaking academic landscape.
With around 20 professors, the faculty is distinguished by close links between disciplines, between students and teachers, as well as between research and practice. This partnership is expected to strengthen the University of Lomé's research and academic capabilities in the field of energy and green hydrogen.
The agreement is a significant milestone in the cooperation between Togolese and German academic institutions. It demonstrates the commitment of both parties to promoting academic excellence and addressing global challenges in the field of energy and sustainability.
