The Ligue des Consommateurs du Togo (LCT) has expressed deep concern over the recurrent power outages and potential increases in electricity and water tariffs in Togo. The LCT is calling for a suspension of any tariff hikes and advocating for national discussions to rethink these essential sectors. The consumer league argues that Togolese consumers are already facing a deteriorating situation, with frequent power outages causing damage to appliances and equipment.

The power outages have severe consequences, including losses for households, traders, and small restaurant owners, as well as disruptions to economic activities and essential services like healthcare and education. The LCT notes that consumers are not compensated for these losses. Furthermore, the outages force households and businesses to incur additional expenses for fuel, candles, and lamps, exacerbating the country's insecurity and economic challenges.

In 2025, the government implemented an average 12.5% increase in tariffs, which was met with widespread criticism and eventually partially suspended. The LCT argues that any future tariff hikes must be preceded by genuine consultations with all stakeholders. However, with the cost of living increasing and incomes stagnant, the league questions which sectors of the economy remain social and equitable.

The LCT has received information suggesting that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is pressuring the Togolese government to raise electricity and water prices. The league urges the government to clarify this situation, warning that applying purely financial logic to essential goods could have disastrous consequences for social cohesion and the national economy.

While acknowledging the financial difficulties faced by the sector, the LCT insists that consumers should not bear the brunt of deficits they did not cause. The league demands that the government organize national discussions on the water and energy sectors, bringing together all stakeholders to develop a sustainable and consensual energy policy.

The LCT is calling for an immediate suspension of any tariff hike projects, greater transparency on sector costs, and the implementation of a public program to reduce power outages. The league also advocates for the preservation and expansion of the social bracket. Meanwhile, the LCT remains open to constructive dialogue and urges consumers to report any harm they suffer.

The LCT's president, Dr. Emmanuel SOGADJI, emphasized that energy and water are not luxury goods but essential conditions for dignity and development. The league's stance reflects the concerns of Togolese consumers, who are eager for reliable and affordable access to these vital services. The government's response to these demands will likely have significant implications for the country's economic and social stability.
