The province of Tizi Ouzou in Algeria has achieved a significant milestone in its internet connectivity, with a fiber optic penetration rate of 65.6%, surpassing the national average. According to the operational direction of Algeria Telecom in Tizi Ouzou, the province has connected over 9,500 households to the internet in the first eight months of 2019. This has led to a substantial increase in the penetration rate, which was only 32% in 2015.
The achievement is attributed to Algeria Telecom's efforts to expand the fiber optic network in the province. In the first eight months of 2019, the company laid down 124.31 km of fiber optic cables, connecting 17 localities, including three commune chiefs' offices: Imsouhal, Akbil, and M'Kira. The company aims to complete the connection of all 67 commune chiefs' offices to the fiber optic network by addressing the remaining three localities: Aït Chafaâ, Illilten, and Iflissen.
The expansion of the fiber optic network has enabled the provision of high-speed internet services to most regions of the province. Algeria Telecom has also deployed new technologies, including FTTX, in Tizi Ouzou, which has been selected as a pilot province. As part of this initiative, 27 neighborhoods have been equipped with last-generation technologies, including 15 with FTTH (Fiber to the Home), also known as "Idoom Fibre", providing a capacity of 7,164 accesses.
In addition to expanding the fiber optic network, Algeria Telecom has also focused on improving mobile internet coverage in the province. The company has deployed 84 ENOD B equipment for 4G LTE, providing coverage to 94% of the province. This has enabled residents in remote areas to access high-speed internet services.
The improvement in internet connectivity has been a major priority for Algeria Telecom in Tizi Ouzou. The company has undertaken significant investments in infrastructure development, including the laying of new fiber optic cables and the deployment of new technologies. These efforts have contributed to a substantial increase in internet penetration rates in the province.
