The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC) has reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to addressing the issue of estimated billing in the power sector. In a statement released on Sunday, 1 November 2026, the council's spokesperson, Dele Alake, emphasized that Tinubu is working to ensure that Nigerians have access to reliable and metered electricity. Alake urged Nigerians to consider Tinubu's 2023 campaign promises in their entirety, rather than focusing solely on his pledge to end estimated billing.

During the 2023 campaign, Tinubu vowed to provide 24-hour electricity and end estimated billing, stating that if he failed to fulfill this promise, Nigerians should deny him a second term unless he provided a convincing reason for the shortfall. Alake revealed that the Tinubu administration has taken several steps to reform the power sector, including the signing of the 2023 Electricity Act, which empowers state governments to participate in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.

The 2023 Electricity Act has enabled states such as Lagos, Enugu, Abia, Ekiti, Oyo, Kaduna, and Niger to establish their own power sector agencies and attract private sector investment. Additionally, the administration has launched the Presidential Metering Initiative to reduce the metering gap, which Alake claimed stood at over 7 million. According to him, over 1.5 million meters have been provided to customers within three years.

Alake also disclosed that the government is working to settle the accumulated debts in the power sector, estimated to be around N6 trillion, and has established a N4 trillion government guarantee scheme to settle verified debts. Furthermore, he stated that eight new power plants were approved for construction in June 2026, while four others are being upgraded. Five additional Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) projects were approved in 2024.

The government is also planning to upgrade the Osogbo control center and construct a major transmission line from the East to the West. Regarding estimated billing, Alake explained that the classification of customers into different categories was designed to improve the efficiency of distribution companies and take into account the paying capacity of communities.

While acknowledging that challenges persist in the power sector, Alake emphasized that the government is committed to addressing these issues. He assured Nigerians that Tinubu will present his administration's achievements and outstanding challenges to the public during his re-election bid in 2027.

The APC-PCC's statement comes as a reassurance to Nigerians that the Tinubu administration remains committed to resolving the country's electricity metering issues. The government's efforts to reform the power sector and provide reliable electricity to Nigerians are ongoing, with several initiatives underway to address the challenges facing the sector.
