The South African Weather Service has forecast isolated thunderstorms across several provinces on Tuesday, September 22. Gauteng will experience partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions, with isolated showers and thundershowers developing during the afternoon. Similar conditions are forecast for the North West, where isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected. The Free State will start the day with patches of fog in the east and along the Lesotho border before becoming partly cloudy and cool to warm.
Mpumalanga will be cloudy in places during the morning, with fog expected over parts of the Highveld. Conditions will become partly cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and thundershowers. The Lowveld region can expect warmer temperatures. In Limpopo, morning cloud, drizzle and fog are possible along the escarpment, with isolated showers and thunderstorms forecast over the central and south-eastern parts of the province later in the day.
The Northern Cape will experience morning fog in the south before partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions set in. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are forecast for most areas, excluding the north-west. The Western Cape will be cloudy with morning fog along the south coast before conditions become partly cloudy and warm to hot.
The Eastern Cape has a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with both halves of the province expected to experience morning fog south of the escarpment. The western half will be partly cloudy and warm, while scattered thunderstorms are expected in western areas from the afternoon. The eastern half will experience partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
KwaZulu-Natal will start Tuesday with morning fog over the interior before becoming partly cloudy and cool to warm. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected, while coastal winds will shift from southerly to south-westerly to easterly and north-easterly during the day. The UVB sunburn index will be high in the province.
While thunderstorms are forecast across a broad stretch of the country, the weather service has issued no severe weather alerts for Tuesday. The South African Weather Service has, however, urged households, farmers and disaster management authorities to plan ahead as forecasts point to increased chances of below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures in the 2026/27 summer.
