Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange-level weather alert for several parts of the country, warning of thunderstorms, hail, high temperatures, and strong wind gusts through Saturday and Sunday. The DGM expects thunderstorms producing between 30 and 40 millimeters of rainfall, accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts, across several provinces, including Tinghir, Figuig, Jerada, Errachidia, Midelt, Boulemane, Ouarzazate, Zagora, and Taourirt on Saturday. The storms are expected between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m., according to the alert.
In addition to the thunderstorms, temperatures are expected to reach between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday in several provinces, including Kenitra, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, and Khemisset. The DGM also forecast locally strong wind gusts ranging from 75 to 85 kilometers per hour in the Tangier-Assilah and Fahs-Anjra areas on both days.
The DGM's forecast also indicates that unstable weather conditions are expected across parts of the country, with locally heavy thunderstorms and a risk of hail and storm-related wind gusts over the Oriental region, the Atlas and its eastern slopes, as well as the southeast. Relatively hot to locally hot weather is expected over the southeast, the far south of the Saharan provinces, and the northern and central inland plains.
The agency also expects cloudy conditions with scattered showers over the Mediterranean and Rif regions, while low clouds and locally light drizzle could affect Atlantic coastal areas during the morning and night. The DGM's orange vigilance level indicates a significant risk linked to dangerous weather phenomena and calls for increased vigilance.
The DGM advises people to exercise caution when traveling during periods of heavy rainfall, avoid waterways, and never attempt to cross flooded roads on foot or by car. The alert is in place to ensure public safety and awareness of the potential dangers posed by the severe weather conditions.
