Three Orlando Pirates fans, Sakhile Mthethwa, Bafana Mthenjwa, and Dumisani Mgabhi, undertook a long and costly journey from KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg to support their team in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium. The trio, who have been staunch supporters of the team since the days of Brandon Silent and Helman Mkhalele, were undeterred by the daunting 9-hour journey via Piet Retief on a scorching Friday afternoon. They made refreshing stops along the way, taking in the scenic views of Mpumalanga.

The journey was not cheap, with the one-way trip costing them approximately R2,700. Additionally, they each budgeted R2,400 for accommodation at Ecomotel in Park Station for three nights and at least R1,500 for food over the weekend. Despite the costs, the trio said they were driven by their love for the team and the badge. They have traveled extensively to support Orlando Pirates, both domestically and continentally, and even ventured outside of South Africa to Botswana.

The three supporters, who have been following Pirates for a long time, said they were not motivated by financial gain, but rather by their passion for the team. Mthethwa, who owns the car they used for the trip, lives in Richards Bay and had to collect Mgabhi and Mthenjwa from Mtubatuba, adding another leg to their journey. The trio's dedication to the team is evident in their actions, with Mgabhi, affectionately known as '3935', even having a tattoo of the Orlando Pirates crest.

The supporters' daily work allows them to fund their passion for the team. Mgabhi buys and sells cars, Mthenjwa is an electrician, and Mthethwa sells blocks and river sand in Mbonambi. Their partners and families are understanding of their dedication to the team, and they have been able to travel extensively without any issues. The trio's love for Pirates has become second nature to them, and they have been rewarded with memorable experiences, including meeting the team before the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Despite being disappointed with Orlando Pirates' 2-0 loss in the MTN8 final, the trio understands the nature of the game and remains committed to supporting the team through victories and defeats. They appreciate the team's effort and attractive style of play, which has been evident in the last three seasons. According to Mgabhi, there is no team that has played more attractive and better football than Orlando Pirates during this period.

For Mgabhi, Mthethwa, and Mthenjwa, supporting Pirates is a journey worth taking, despite the long distances, costs, and frustrating traffic. They want their kids to know that their fathers supported Pirates and are committed to passing on their love for the team to the next generation. The trio's loyalty to the team is unwavering, and they will continue to follow them, win, draw, or lose.

The Soweto derby is a highly anticipated match, and the trio's dedication to Orlando Pirates is a testament to the team's loyal fan base. As they take on Kaizer Chiefs, one of their biggest rivals, the three supporters will be cheering them on, proud to be part of the Pirates' family. Their story is an inspiration to many, highlighting the passion and commitment of football fans in South Africa.
