Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) has unveiled its third five-year strategic plan, focusing on sustainable financing, digital technology, and stronger partnerships to enhance the country's healthcare system. The 2026-2030 plan aims to help Tanzania respond to a changing health landscape and improve access to quality healthcare. This move comes as countries face changing global health financing conditions and persistent shortages of healthcare workers.
The new strategic plan outlines 10 key result areas, including accountability, sustainable financing, institutional governance, and learning. Digital technology is a key area of focus, with THPS planning to leverage technology to strengthen disease surveillance, clinical and program decision-making, laboratory systems, and access to healthcare. According to THPS Executive Director Dr. Redempta Mbatia, innovation will be guided by practical health needs rather than technology alone.
Dr. Mbatia stated that the plan seeks to ensure the organization remains relevant and responsive to the changing health environment while supporting local efforts to achieve universal health coverage. She emphasized that technological advances are transforming how health services are planned and delivered, and shifts in global health financing require organizations supporting the health sector to adapt.
The launch of the strategic plan was officiated by Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government, Prof. Tumaini Nagu. She urged non-state actors to strengthen the integration of health systems to improve coordination, efficiency, and access to quality healthcare services. Prof. Nagu believed the new strategy aligns with government priorities in the health sector, the Tanzania Development Vision 2050, and other national, regional, and international policies and guidelines.
Prof. Nagu highlighted the importance of digital transformation and modern technologies in improving the efficiency and quality of integrated healthcare services, especially primary healthcare. She also stressed the need for sustainable resources, particularly financing for health programs and interventions that support the government's health-sector goals. Stronger integration is necessary to ensure that different health programs and interventions complement each other instead of operating in isolation.
THPS's new strategic plan is designed to support the government's efforts to achieve universal health coverage. The organization recognizes that partnerships will be crucial in delivering the plan's objectives. As THPS stated, "Strategic Plan Three gives us the direction, but partnership will give us the strength to deliver it."
