Thousands of families in the Fata Borno camp, located in the Kutm locality of North Darfur, are struggling with a growing food gap due to irregular aid distribution. The camp, which hosts approximately 51,500 internally displaced persons (IDPs), including 44,000 long-term IDPs and 7,500 new arrivals, is facing severe humanitarian challenges. Many families, particularly those headed by women, elderly individuals, and children, are in dire need of regular food assistance.
The Fata Borno camp emergency room and the women's chamber have jointly issued an urgent humanitarian appeal to international organizations, charities, UN agencies, and donors. The appeal, obtained by Radio Dabanga, calls for immediate intervention to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the camp. The situation is dire, with IDPs facing severe shortages of food, drinking water, healthcare, and educational services.
The camp is experiencing a severe shortage of drinking water, with six out of 12 water pumps currently out of operation. Only one out of two water tanks is functional, leaving the IDPs struggling to access safe drinking water. This situation necessitates urgent rehabilitation of water sources and increased supplies to meet the needs of the IDPs.
The camp's healthcare situation is also critical, with the main health center facing severe shortages of medicine, medical supplies, and equipment. The center's emergency and referral services are also under strain, requiring immediate support to ensure patients receive basic care. Furthermore, children in the camp are facing significant challenges in accessing education due to a shortage of textbooks, desks, educational materials, and qualified teachers.
Women, girls, children, and other vulnerable groups in the camp require urgent interventions in areas such as protection, reproductive health, nutrition, and provision of basic supplies and psychosocial support. The IDPs also need a safer and more dignified living environment within the camp.
The emergency room and women's chamber have called for urgent and regular food assistance to the most needy families, rehabilitation of water sources and pumps, and provision of safe drinking water. They have also requested support for the health center, including medicine, medical supplies, and equipment, as well as educational materials and qualified teachers.
The humanitarian situation in Fata Borno camp continues to deteriorate, with thousands of IDPs relying on external assistance for survival. The appeal by the emergency room and women's chamber highlights the urgent need for international support to address the severe humanitarian challenges facing the IDPs in the camp.
