Thai costume designer Art Akarach is known for his elaborate pageant creations, but one of his most celebrated designs, Hanuman Thai Boxing, was initially shortlisted but not selected for Miss Universe 2021. Instead of giving up, Akarach sought financial support, entered the design in the Miss Grand Thailand provincial competition, and eventually, it was worn by Engfa Waraha at Miss Grand International 2022, where it received Best National Costume recognition.

Akarach's experience with Hanuman Thai Boxing demonstrates his ability to transform cultural references into visual creations. He is now applying this expertise to a Tanzanian national costume for Jihan Dimachk at Miss Grand International 2026. Akarach collaborated with Tanzanian designer Romy Jay, who developed the original concept, while Akarach brought the design to life with his painting, construction, and costume-making skills.

The Tanzanian national costume combines the country's wildlife, landmarks, local life, and precious gemstones to communicate its identity through fashion. Akarach says he was excited to work on the project, particularly because of Jihan Dimachk, the beauty queen who would wear the creation. The design aims to showcase Tanzania's distinctive landscapes, heritage, and natural wealth.

The partnership between Akarach and Jay builds on an existing relationship with Tanzania's pageant team. Akarach had previously worked with the country's national director, who rented equipment from his shop the previous year. This connection led to another collaboration, requiring Akarach to interpret Jay's creative vision and contribute his technical expertise.

One of the most demanding features of Jihan's outfit is the structure at the back, designed to resemble a dwelling. Akarach had to design it to be lightweight while incorporating a three-dimensional shape. He drew on his knowledge of architecture and painting to approach the costume as both an artistic composition and a technical construction project.

Akarach's background as an art teacher informs his design process. He uses his painting skills to produce realistic depictions of savannah animals, connecting the costume to Tanzania's natural environment. The combination of painting, structure, and embellishment gives the costume its visual character, showcasing the country's wildlife, landmarks, and natural wealth.

The collaboration between Akarach and Jay demonstrates how creative ideas can cross borders while retaining their cultural significance. Akarach's contribution to Tanzania's national costume showcases his technical expertise and attention to detail, making the costume a wearable piece of art that represents the country's identity.
