Authorities in Texas have executed Jamal Howard, a 46-year-old inmate, by lethal injection at the state prison in Huntsville. Howard was pronounced dead at 8:03 pm local time after receiving a dose of pentobarbital. He had spent two decades on death row for the murder of Vicki Swartout during a convenience store robbery in 2000. This marks the 30th execution in the United States this year and the first since a failed execution attempt in Tennessee.

According to Amanda Hernandez, spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Howard was seen chatting with officers during the 45-minute transfer to Huntsville, showing no signs of distress. His legal team had made last-minute appeals, arguing that Howard suffered from intellectual disability and questioning the efficacy of pentobarbital, the same drug used in the failed execution of Krista Pike in Tennessee.

Howard's spiritual advisor, Reverend Jeff Hood, stated that psychologists had determined during the trial that Howard's IQ ranged between 65 and 70, equivalent to that of an 11- or 12-year-old. Hood added that Howard did not fully understand the execution process and reacted calmly when informed of the failed execution of Krista Pike, suggesting he thought an alternative method might be used if the drugs failed.

The execution of Jamal Howard comes as a contrast to the recent case of Krista Pike, who was spared after a botched execution attempt in Tennessee. Pike's lawyers reported that she was conscious and able to communicate after being transferred to a medical facility, although she could not recall the execution attempt.

The incident involving Krista Pike led to the suspension of all scheduled executions in Tennessee pending an investigation. The state's prison commissioner, Frank Stranda, announced his resignation following the incident, which was the second botched execution under his tenure.

Jamal Howard's execution was carried out using pentobarbital, a lethal injection drug that has been used in several executions in the United States. The use of this drug has raised concerns among some experts and advocates, who argue that it can cause unnecessary suffering and does not always result in a quick and painless death.

The execution of Jamal Howard marks the end of a lengthy and contentious process for the inmate and his family. While some have expressed concerns about the use of the death penalty and the specific circumstances of Howard's case, others have emphasized the severity of his crime and the need for justice for the victim and her family.
