A violent confrontation between two groups of fishermen in Lake Victoria has resulted in two deaths and two injuries. The incident occurred near Ndhuru beach, involving fishermen from Koginga Beach Management Unit (BMU) in Homa Bay Sub-county and those from Ndhuru BMU in Mbita Sub-county. According to Homa Bay BMU Network Chairman Edward Oremo, the fight began when fishermen from Koginga beach entered a fishing zone set aside by their Ndhuru counterparts as a breeding area.

The fishermen from Ndhuru beach accused their Koginga counterparts of using illegal fishing gear in their designated breeding zone, leading to the violent outburst. The confrontation involved the use of crude weapons such as stones and pangas. The conflict resulted in two fishermen from Ndhuru beach disappearing in the lake, with allegations that they were killed and their bodies dumped into the water.

Chief of Lambwe East Location, Benard Ouma, confirmed that two fishermen from Ndhuru beach were missing, and their bodies had not been recovered. Two other fishermen from Ndhuru beach sustained serious injuries and were hospitalised at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital. It was also reported that the engine of the boat belonging to Ndhuru fishermen was removed and dumped into the lake.

Mbita Sub-county Police Commander Antony Barasa stated that a team comprising Kenya Coast Guard Service Officers and fishermen had begun searching for the bodies of the two missing fishermen. The police were also working to arrest those responsible for the incident. Barasa urged residents to report grievances to the police rather than taking the law into their own hands.

The incident highlights the ongoing territorial disputes and competition for resources among fishermen in Lake Victoria. The lake is a vital source of livelihood for many communities, and tensions often arise over fishing territories and methods. Local authorities have been working to establish and enforce regulations to manage fishing activities and prevent such conflicts.

The police investigation is ongoing, with efforts to gather statements from witnesses and identify those responsible for the violence. The retrieval exercise for the missing bodies continues, and authorities are working to maintain peace and order in the region. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for sustainable management of shared resources to prevent such conflicts.

The Lake Victoria region has faced numerous challenges related to fishing and territorial disputes, with various stakeholders calling for collaborative management of the lake's resources. Authorities and local leaders are working to address these issues through dialogue and enforcement of existing regulations. The incident near Ndhuru beach underscores the importance of finding lasting solutions to these disputes to ensure the safety and livelihoods of those dependent on the lake.
