The Durban Regional Court in South Africa recently handed down significant prison sentences to 10 men convicted of multiple armed robberies. The defendants, aged between 28 and 38, were found guilty of committing a series of business robberies in various areas around Durban between 2017 and 2019.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the men would enter businesses disguising themselves as customers before producing firearms and threatening security guards and employees. They would then steal cash, cellphones, clothing, and other items. The investigation led to the arrest of the suspects in 2019, with most of them already in custody for other offenses.

The NPA's Regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, stated that during the trial, prosecutor Surekha Marimuthu presented evidence from 27 witnesses. This included experts in fingerprint and facial recognition who linked the accused to the crimes. The prosecution highlighted that the armed robberies were well-orchestrated, serious, and committed during the day, posing threats to the public, employees, and security personnel.

The prosecution also presented evidence from an employee of the Foschini Group (TFG) Limited, to which most of the affected businesses belong. The witness testified that the businesses suffered losses amounting to several million rand due to the robberies. Additionally, the companies incurred extra expenditure to enhance security measures, while employees were severely traumatized by the incidents.

The court handed down the following effective sentences: Thabiso Mdletshe received 41 years, Philani Magongo received 10 years, Wonder Brilliant Mcwabe received 31 years, Michael Nxumalo received 24 years, Khanyisani Thusi received 18 years, Lindani Ndlovu received 18 years, Thokozani Mdlalose received 30 years, Sandile Ngcobo received 21 years, Sabelo Shandu received 25 years, and Andile Mchunu received 27 years.

The combined effective sentences of the 10 men amount to 245 years of imprisonment. Ramkisson-Kara expressed satisfaction with the sentences, emphasizing that business robberies not only endanger lives but also inflict significant financial losses on businesses and negatively impact the economy.

The NPA reaffirmed its commitment to vigorously prosecuting perpetrators of serious and violent crimes. The successful prosecution and sentencing of these serial robbers demonstrate the authority's dedication to ensuring justice is served and holding offenders accountable for their actions.
