The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has introduced technology-driven tax reforms aimed at simplifying compliance, reducing revenue leakages, and creating a fairer and more predictable operating environment for businesses. According to Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the NRS, these reforms are designed to promote prosperity and economic growth rather than impose additional hardship on businesses. The reforms were unveiled at the 21st Abuja International Trade Fair (AITF) in Abuja, which was organized by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).
The 21st Abuja International Trade Fair, held under the theme "Resilience: Trade, Taxation and the Economy," brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors to discuss ways to build a resilient economy. Dr. Adedeji emphasized that the theme was timely, given the need for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector. He stressed that the NRS is focused on making taxation simpler, fairer, more transparent, and easier to comply with, particularly for businesses that create jobs, invest, and contribute to economic activity.
The NRS chairman highlighted the importance of technology in transforming tax administration. He mentioned platforms such as Rev360 and electronic invoicing, which are designed to make taxpayer registration, filing, and payment more seamless. Dr. Adedeji urged businesses to engage directly with the NRS on challenges affecting their operations, assuring them that the service is prepared to listen, provide clarity, and improve processes. This, he believes, will strengthen tax administration systems, reduce leakages, and promote a level playing field.
Dr. Adedeji also called for simplified taxation and deeper engagement with the business community. He emphasized that effective dialogue is critical to ensuring that tax policies support rather than constrain economic activity. The NRS chairman expressed the service's commitment to supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and promoting sustainable economic growth. He encouraged businesses to grow, invest, create jobs, and generate value, as their success contributes to Nigeria's economic development.
The Second Deputy President of the ACCI, Dr. Aliyu Hong, echoed Dr. Adedeji's sentiments, calling for sustained dialogue between the NRS and the business community. He emphasized the need for a transparent and predictable operating environment, which, he believes, is essential for investment, enterprise growth, and job creation. Dr. Hong described the participation of the NRS in the trade fair as significant, as it enables businesses and members of the public to better understand tax administration, compliance requirements, and available services.
The ACCI Director-General, Mr. Agbaidu Jideani, also spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of constructive engagement between tax authorities and businesses. He emphasized that this engagement can improve tax compliance and create a more predictable business environment. Mr. Jideani reaffirmed the chamber's commitment to entrepreneurship, policy advocacy, dispute resolution, trade promotion, and business development. He listed the chamber's four centers, which provide services to entrepreneurs, businesses, policymakers, and other stakeholders across the business community.
The Nigeria Revenue Service's technology-driven tax reforms aim to promote economic growth and simplify compliance for businesses. The reforms are part of a broader effort to build a resilient economy through stronger collaboration between government and the private sector. Key stakeholders, including businesses and policymakers, are expected to engage with the NRS to ensure that tax policies support economic activity. The trade fair provided a platform for networking, market access, partnerships, and policy discussions, including on taxation and trade.
