Several counties in Mississippi, including Jackson, Hinds, and De Soto, reported technical issues and voter card shortages during the US midterm elections. According to Lily Moynihan, director of policy and research, her team received reports of problems at multiple locations. Jackson County, which has faced international scrutiny in the past, experienced the most incidents.

In Jackson County, reports indicated that all voting machines were malfunctioning, with at least one location experiencing internet connectivity issues. The office of the Mississippi Secretary of State reported a significant increase in calls to its election hotline, with complaints about delayed polling station openings, voting machine malfunctions, and issues accessing government agency websites.

Voter Debbie Price recounted her experience at the Ocean Springs polling station in Jackson County, where she found a long line after waiting 20 minutes for the station to open. The voting machines were not working, and there were no paper ballots available. Price eventually cast her vote after 45 minutes, but witnessed around 25-30 people leave due to the delays.

In De Soto County, Kelly Jacobs, head of the local "Indivisible" branch, reported that one polling station had run out of pre-printed voter cards and was told they would not receive more. Voters were instead offered blank cards. Jacobs visited two other locations, one of which opened late and ran out of cards by 10 am.

Jacobs expressed concerns that these issues were not coincidental, suggesting that they were part of a larger pattern of voter suppression. She noted that there were no consequences for running out of voter cards, which she believed was a deliberate tactic to disenfranchise voters.

The issues reported in Mississippi counties highlight concerns about the integrity and accessibility of the electoral process. While some problems were reportedly resolved, many voters faced significant delays and obstacles in casting their ballots.

The midterm elections in Mississippi and across the United States have significant implications for the country's politics and governance. Despite the challenges faced by voters in some areas, many citizens successfully cast their ballots, exercising their right to participate in the democratic process.
