The Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA) has expressed its commitment to supporting improved nutrition policies and legal measures in Tanzania. This commitment comes after the launch of a new framework aimed at encouraging healthier food choices in the country. TAWLA's Executive Director, Tike Mwambipile, announced that the association collaborated with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to develop the Tanzania Nutrient Profile Model (TzNPM) 2026.
The Tanzania Nutrient Profile Model (TzNPM) 2026 serves as a guideline for assessing the nutritional content of foods, including levels of sugar, salt, and fats. During the National Nutrition Day celebrations in Dodoma, Mwambipile emphasized the importance of collective efforts between government institutions, civil society, and various stakeholders to tackle nutrition issues affecting public health. She highlighted that proper nutrition is vital for both individual wellness and national progress.
Mwambipile pointed out that women's health is significant, as their wellbeing directly impacts family health and national development. She described the nutrient profiling model as a valuable tool for enhancing nutrition policies and empowering consumers to make better food choices. The model is expected to play a crucial role in promoting public health and addressing nutrition challenges in Tanzania.
Despite ongoing nutrition challenges, including undernutrition and rising rates of obesity and diet-related diseases, Tanzania faces significant health concerns. The 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey revealed that 30% of children under five are stunted, while 4% are classified as overweight. These statistics highlight the need for effective nutrition policies and interventions to address these issues.
The Ministry of Health has stressed the need to transform eating habits by reducing excessive salt, sugar, and fat intake, as well as promoting physical activity. Permanent Secretary Dr. Grace Magembe highlighted the role of household food choices and food preparation in improving nutrition. She encouraged the public to embrace a variety of locally available foods and called for collaboration across health, agriculture, education, and other sectors.
To promote nutrition education and encourage healthier lifestyles, the government introduced nutrition guidance materials for religious leaders. These materials aim to integrate nutrition education into community outreach. The National Nutrition Day was observed under the theme “Strengthen Health: Eat Naturally, Reduce Salt, Sugar and Fats.” This theme emphasizes the importance of adopting healthy eating habits to improve overall health.
TAWLA reiterated its commitment to partner with the Ministry of Health and others to ensure all Tanzanians have access to good nutrition, regardless of their location. The association's support for the new framework and nutrition policies is expected to contribute to improved public health and nutrition outcomes in Tanzania. Key stakeholders will continue to work together to address nutrition challenges and promote healthier food choices.
