Allute Lissu Mughwai, a High Court advocate and elder brother of detained CHADEMA opposition leader Tundu Lissu, died in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, while receiving treatment at Selian Regional Hospital in Arusha. According to his family, he passed away at approximately 2am. His sister, Rose Masesa, said that Mughwai had been unwell for an extended period but had shown signs of recovery in recent days.

The family had expected Mughwai to travel to Dar es Salaam after his condition improved, but his health suddenly deteriorated, forcing relatives to rush him to hospital, where he subsequently died. Masesa expressed shock at the sudden turn of events, saying the family had been optimistic about his recovery. The funeral will be held at the family home in Arusha, with burial arrangements yet to be confirmed.

The loss is particularly painful for the family given the circumstances surrounding Tundu Lissu, who has remained in custody since his arrest on April 9, 2025, in Mbinga town following a public rally. He was charged with treason, a non-bailable capital offense that carries a potential death penalty, as well as multiple counts of publishing false information under Tanzania's Cyber Crimes Act.

Authorities accused Tundu Lissu of inciting the public to reject and disrupt elections as part of CHADEMA's "No Reforms, No Election" campaign, which demanded changes to Tanzania's electoral commission ahead of the general elections. A court is scheduled to deliver its judgment in the treason case within five days of his brother's death.

Nancy Odindo, a Current Affairs Editor at TUKO.co.ke, reported that Mughwai's death occurred while his brother remains in detention facing treason charges. Odindo has over six years of journalism experience and joined TUKO.co.ke in 2023. She holds a B.Sc. in Journalism from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among Tanzanians and human rights activists, who have been following the developments in the treason case against Tundu Lissu. The CHADEMA party has been a vocal critic of the Tanzanian government's handling of the opposition and the electoral process.

As the family prepares to lay Mughwai to rest, they are also anxiously awaiting the court's decision in the treason case against Tundu Lissu. The outcome is expected to have significant implications for Tanzanian politics and the future of the opposition.
