The Tanzanian Ministry of Energy and the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) have convened to discuss ways to enhance public awareness of ongoing oil and gas projects in the country. The meeting, which took place on October 13, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy and PURA. The meeting aimed to address the need for improved public education on oil and gas projects.

According to Nteghenjwa Hosseah, Head of Government Communications at the Ministry of Energy, the government has been implementing various projects, including oil and gas exploration, development, and production projects. However, public awareness of these projects remains limited, leading to a lack of understanding among citizens about the projects being implemented. Hosseah noted that the government has a responsibility to ensure that the public receives timely and accurate information about these projects.

The government is currently undertaking several projects, including the 3D seismic data acquisition project in the Lindi-Mtwara block, the 2D seismic data acquisition project in the Eyasi-Wembere block, and preparations for drilling natural gas wells in the Ruvuma block. Despite these efforts, public awareness of the projects and their benefits remains low. The Ministry of Energy and its agencies have a duty to provide the public with accessible information about these projects.

Charles Nyangi, Head of Local Content and Stakeholder Engagement at PURA, emphasized that the authority will continue to enhance public awareness of oil and gas projects. PURA will work to build the capacity of journalists to report on upstream petroleum issues and provide them with opportunities to visit project sites. This will enable journalists to provide accurate and informed reporting on oil and gas projects.

Nyangi noted that PURA has been using various media tools to disseminate information to the public and has provided training to journalists. The authority has also offered journalists opportunities to visit project sites to increase their understanding of the projects. This effort aims to enhance public awareness and engagement with oil and gas projects.

The meeting between the Ministry of Energy and PURA highlights the government's commitment to improving public awareness of oil and gas projects. The two agencies will work together to develop strategies for enhancing public education and engagement. This collaboration aims to ensure that citizens have access to accurate and timely information about oil and gas projects.

The enhanced public awareness of oil and gas projects is expected to promote transparency and accountability in the sector. It will also enable citizens to participate in discussions and decision-making processes related to oil and gas projects. The government's efforts to improve public awareness will contribute to the sustainable development of Tanzania's oil and gas sector.
