The Government of Tanzania has renewed the Special Mining Licenses for Barrick’s North Mara Gold Mine for a further 15 years. This development allows the company to continue investing in the mine, its employees, and surrounding communities. The mine, located in Tarime District, Mara Region, has been in operation since 2002 and is a significant contributor to Tanzania's economy.

Barrick has made substantial contributions to Tanzania's economy since 2019, with approximately $5.3 billion in investments. In 2025 alone, the company contributed $1.2 billion through taxes, royalties, salaries, dividends, and local procurement. The company's commitment to local procurement is evident, with over 90% of its procurement sourced from companies registered in Tanzania, most of which are indigenous businesses.

The renewal of the mining licenses is a testament to the strong partnership between Barrick and the Government of Tanzania. In 2025, the government recognized Barrick as the country’s top dividend payer and highest contributor to government revenue. This milestone reflects the company's efforts to build a stronger partnership with the government and local communities.

According to Seb Bock, Chief Executive Officer of Barrick’s Rest of World business, the renewal is an important milestone for North Mara and the company's partnership with Tanzania. Bock emphasized that building partnerships of real depth and trust with all stakeholders is at the core of Barrick's business. The company's efforts have led to strengthened relations with local communities, with Tarime District Commissioner Major Edward Gowele noting that residents now view the mine as a community partner.

The North Mara Gold Mine combines the Nyabirama open pit with the Gokona underground mine and has a processing plant with a capacity for an average of 8,000 tonnes of ore per day. As of December 31, 2025, Barrick reported 3.2 million ounces of gold reserves for its 84% share of North Mara. The mine has a significant workforce, with approximately 3,000 people employed, 96% of whom are Tanzanian nationals.

The Government of Tanzania holds a 16% interest in North Mara, while Barrick and the government share the economic benefits equally. In 2019, Barrick took operational control of North Mara and established Twiga Minerals to operate the mine and Bulyanhulu. This partnership has created more opportunities for Tanzanians and has contributed to the country's economic growth.

The renewal of the mining licenses provides a stable operating environment for Barrick to continue investing in the mine and surrounding communities. With its commitment to building strong partnerships and contributing to Tanzania's economy, Barrick is poised to continue playing a significant role in the country's mining sector.
